Hi Pat,
Georgia Pacific has done some interesting partnering with Nature Conservancy
of GA. I'm not sure if it's urban, but it's partnering none-the-less.

Maybe that partnership can inspire your efforts?

To CUFN ,

In the spirit of brainstorming ....

Re; private sector support ;

Are there collaborative models out there where the private sector has a
stake in the eventual harvesting and processing the urban trees ? { Urban
forestry ? } .

Around here { temperate rain forest }, if the urban trees were groomed for
higher value stems , not only would they be stronger and provide their
services longer , but they would be an asset instead of a liability. { a
large , gnarly tree around here costs thousands to remove in an urban
setting. { and yields little but firewood , compost and biomass}. In
comparison , a fairly clear, hardwood or softwood , custom cut for a
specific processor , can be worth thousands. Now , if that processor
operates in a “green” fashion , with “waste” converted to fuel , one has a
“cradle to cradle” , sustainable, local industry.

I’m sure I’m “ preaching to the choir” to many reading this. But that’s what
we are up to.

I am doing some work on private sector (i.e. corporate) support for urban
forests and wanted to ask the Network some pointed questions, which I will
keep in confidence, namely:

- How much in dollar figures would you say that the private sector
supports the urban forests of your community or within your organization?

        It fluctuates from year to year, but tends to be between $10,000 -
$20,000.

- In % terms, how are those dollars divided amongst: tree planting,
tree maintenance, education and awareness, insect/disease protection and
other
80-90% tree planting, with the remainder being education and awareness.

- Any observations wrt the motivation or knowledge base of the
private sector would be appreciated

        Tends to be pretty basic in terms of wanting to get involved in the
community doing some tangible work on the ground. Of course everyone loves
to plant trees.
