I would like to take up JESSICA TIVY's invitation to respond to NEAL AVEN's call for information re: Forces that Tree Root's exert.
A good report to reference is Jeremy Barrell's report Trees and Structural Damage
http://www.barrelltreecare.co.uk/pdfs/BTC51-RICS-Complete-040311-LR.pdf
In Jeremy's report he references the Forces Exerted by Tree Roots http://www.treehelp.info/ .
This report contains case studies and calculations about the forces that Tree Roots can exert.
However I would like to question your approach. Instead of "hardening" the infrastructure such as driveways, building foundations... at great expense would it not be much cheaper and more efficient to use Root Barrier technology to protect
the infrastructure from tree root damage? Then it is just a matter of specifications.
There are many Journal Articles on the efficacy of Root Barrier technology to protect hardscapes going back to at least 2000.

The only person who I know that was working on this was Jason Grabowski at Rutgers. grabosky at AESOP.Rutgers.edu<mailto:grabosky at AESOP.Rutgers.edu> He was part way thru a very promising research project that ran into funding issues. Possibly a contact to him might reveal more and also he might share his literature search findings. If anyone is working on this I bet he knows.

Hi Neal,
We specify the following product on our jobs - perhaps the company may share information with you that would be helpful.

Subject: [CANUFNET] Tree roots and pavement
Hi all,
I am currently searching for information related to the forces that tree roots exert. The goal of my research on this topic is to work with an engineering firm to analyse these forces to inform building requirements in Surrey in order to give builders the specifications they need to install driveways and walkways that can better withstand the forces that tree roots exert. The hope is that properly built driveways and walkways will then have fewer root heave problems in the future as our urban forest matures.
Do you happen to have any research at your fingertips on this topic? Or any suggestions to direct my search?
Cheers,
NEAL AVEN
