Good morning,

To provide some clarification on Ms. Ethier's point, the newspaper article she shared refers to a private company's marketing campaign which focused on a door to door solicitation for EAB treatments.

What is incredibly problematic with this case, in my opinion, is the notices generated a great deal of confusion. In at least a dozen municipalities, citizens believed that the doortags came from the municipality and not a private company selling treatment. Many municipalities in the Greater Montreal Area have developed agreements with official EAB treatment service providers which makes the whole situation pretty murky. Consequently, many towns issued a buyer beware type of a notice about this company. Here are some examples of the notice and how specific municipalities reacted :

- https://m.facebook.com/Chateauguay/photos/a.149027858492535.30559.148799821848672/1100873003308011/?type=3&comment_id=1101069326621712&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R%22%7D

It's interesting case study which draws to attention several points : 1) municipalities need to demonstrate leadership and develop strong and clear communications strategies to inform the public of EAB along with what the risks are and which options are possible for citizens. 2) associations and educational institutions (such as university extensions and parapublic groups) have a role to play in promoting safe and logical management practices 3) companies will always try to make a buck, but doing business ethically should be considered at all times 4) doing business with a competent tree care professional with good references is key, consumers should be wary of door to door advertising or at least ask for a few estimates or opinions before hiring one company. You know, all of your standard "why hire an arborist" arguments are applicable here.

Just out of personal curiosity, I would be interested to know if this type of issue has occurred in other Canadian municipalities dealing with EAB.

All the best,
Meg

Hello,

Please read on a not so helping notice from a town just 40 minutes from Montreal ( so many high risk areas are being devastated by the EAB) are EAB high risk zones. As a consulting Arborist i have a serious discomfort, too many messages differing. Different action/approaches can be foreseen, however budgeted anticipation or la lack of knowledge will affect shores, wetland and land natural infrastructures to and from the Saint-Laurence. Rural administrations can't look at the exponential reality, no money, no solution other than to negate. Still, the most growing area of all of Canada, for at least the past seven years, the MRCVS, Vaudreuil /Soulanges, recently acknowledged (2015) that the EAB. This remote region is part of the PMAD - CMM.
Ashes are predominant all over the southern shores of Eastern Canada's second most important river, the Ottawa River. Unforeseen reality is, by administration, some times damageable. Local journals, as well, are afraid to loose advertisement income, they won't stand by their readership.
