[CANUFNET] Cost-Sharing Programs with Homeowners

We do not have an ash injection program, but we do have it in our Forestry Bylaw that any insecticides used on city trees must be approved by our pest management people and applications must take a course on spraying city trees offered by the City. They also need a provincial pesticide applicator license.

Hi Joel,
Thanks for responding. I am actually referring to only municipally-owned trees, not private trees. We have been asked by many homeowners if they could help with the cost of treating the boulevard trees because they don't want to wait for City Council to make its decision whether we should treat or not treat. We have recommended treating 50% of eligible ash trees but Council has not yet agreed to that. Many citizens are anxious to get a head start and have offered to pay for treatment. I'm wondering if other cities have entered into such a program.
Shelley

Hi Shelly

Here in Toronto we only treat trees that are on city property. Any ash tree that is on private land is responsibility of the property owner and that includes removal costs of the tree as well. We did recently meet with several foresters from Montreal and they told us that there is a cost sharing program that they are using. It sounded quite complicated. Here is a contact:

Hope that helps

Hello,
I am interested to hear about programs that cities have initiated to share the cost with homeowners of treating municipal trees for EAB. I would like to know how successful they have been, what percentage of the cost that homeowners pay, what trees are eligible and what difficulties have been encountered.

We have recently discovered EAB in Thunder Bay and City Council wants me to explore cost-sharing opportunities. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
