Hi Ian.
Have a look at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, they introduced a system for dedication where memorial trees were recorded in a book which was on public display, provide a map location of the tree and a certificate. I know it's different circumstances, but it worked as they had problems with plaques being a magnet for trouble.
We have a system at the NCC at Rideau Hall, for ceremonial tree collection. we have the tree and plaque in a GIS System and database, with all the information captured in case of losses, that's essential IMO. Memorial trees can be a tricky and area plantings I think are more approriate for public spaces, but don't have the impact of a ceremory on the day of, but could if planned out. It depends on the event. We carryoout State Visit plantings and have over 140 at Rideau Hall. I will send a layout of a plaque which cost arounf $300 and we use Duck bill anchors to prevent vandals. (which we have from time to time).
I will send more info when I get back. Cheers Mark

Subject: [CANUFNET] Memorial trees and plaques
Hello
I’m interested in hearing from others who have a memorial/donated tree program with plaques.
In Kelowna, we allow citizens to donate trees for planting in parks, but we don’t allow them to have a plaque except at the Cemetery. There’s a few reasons for this, such as maintenance concerns and vandalism. We had a bad experience 15 years ago where some trees with plaques seemed to be a magnet for vandalism, so we stopped offering this.
Do you have a tree donation program? Do you allow plaques next to donated trees? How much to do charge?
thanks
