Public invited to learn about forest values, uses and potential.
On Saturday April 7 there will be a conference in New Glasgow on a wide variety of interesting topics related to forests. The annual central region event will be held at Summer Street Industries at 72 Park Street. The main audience of this popular conference is woodland owners, operators, forest industry and individuals interested in forests and sustainable forest management.
The featured topics this year are: the experiences of a full-time woodland owner/operator, Peter Spicer of Spencer's Island, who won the 2017 Provincial Woodland Owner of the Year Award; researching the potential for heating public buildings with wood chip based heat; encouraging biodiversity and silviculture on your property; the role of mycorrhizae in forests; hardwood management; drone use in forestry; and forest pests to be aware of.
Northern Pulp personnel will provide a presentation on the latest developments in their woodlands and mill. Author Laurie Lacey will educate participants about some of the common Mi'Kmaq medicine plants found in Nova Scotia woodlands. St F X professor Randy Lauff will provide an interesting and entertaining presentation on owls of the forest.
The conference is organized by the Department of Natural Resources and the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association, Conform Ltd, and the Assoc. for Sustainable Forestry. There will be a large number of exhibitors in attendance who provide a wide range of products and services that may be of interest to woodland owners.
A hearty meal, snacks and door prize draws will be included. The registration cost is $25. One of the highlights of the conference is that every person registered has a chance of winning the grand prize at the end of the day - a new professional grade chainsaw, provided by MC Power.
