Thank you Philip for initiating this important discussion and sharing Dr. Julian Dunster’s review.

I reviewed the recalled version of 10th guide and the four pages corrigendum dated November 27, 2018. I have not received the corrected version yet. I do have many concerns with this edition. All of them and more have been well addressed in Dr. Julian Dunster’s review.

I believe it is definitely the time to update our plant appraisal. I love it to be a Canadian guide but I think both US and Canada will benefit from a new edition after 20 years from the last edition. I think 9th edition is a great foundation to build on and we do not have to re-invent the wheel.

Our Tree inspectors/by-law officers in the Town of Oakville have extensively used 9th edition in their legal procedures in court for 15 years. We, in the Town of Oakville, will continue using 9th edition for now.

Thanks,

Jalil

Subject: [CANUFNET] 10th Guide to Plant Appraisal - Dr. Dunster reveals the truth

Hello,

Some of you may be aware of the esoteric practice of tree and plant appraisal. If you are, you may be aware of the recent publication of the 10th CTLA Guide for Plant Appraisal. Still fewer of you will likely have had the chance to get the first publication before it was recalled. We now await a “corrected” version. If you did get the document, you need a corrigendum to try to use it at this time.

If you have read the whole document and “figured it out”, kudos to you.

In the midst of this uncertainty many professionals have chosen to continue to use the tried and true methods in the 9th Edition. The most common methods have been vetted through Canadian legal tests and have been fully accepted. Since the 10th is brand new and introduces changes to almost all former practices, introduces new ones, and even abandons some, their worthiness in a legal framework is unknown.

Dr. Julian Dunster recently wrote an excellent review of the 10th and it was published in Tree Service Canada. In this thorough and extensive review, Julian shares with the readers his poignant concerns about many aspects of the document as well as pointing the reader to those areas that are valuable and help advance plant appraisal. His review is attached.

If you know everything about this topic, or very little but are intrigued by where the practice of plant appraisal may be headed, this is an interesting and important read.

Thanks go to Dr. Dunster for taking the time and making the effort to be open and honest in his review.

I would welcome any and all discussion from everyone on this subject. This publication (10th Guide) could have a significant effect on Urban Forestry across Canada and it might not be positive... Is anyone concerned? Is it time that we have a Canadian guide to plant appraisal?

Sincerely,

Philip van Wassenaer, B.SC., MFC
