[CANUFNET] large tree moves

Actually all the trees at city hall, except the oaks, moved successfully. The three oaks were not moved till well after bud break and I advised not to try moving the oaks after the project delayed their move time. But they did it any way and the trees were dead by the end of the first summer. Additionally the trees were supposed to be healed into gravel beds for one year, They actually were not planted for over two years, again due to project delays. All moved well and the last time I saw them about 5 years after transplant were fully established. some of the trees were in full leaf when moved the second time. The key was digging before bud break, air-spade digging and holding in gravel beds. At the City hall project the trees were so large that heavy equipment would have been required on the parking deck and the engineers determined the loads too great. Bar root allowed us to move them with very light weight equipment. There is an arborist in Cleveland, Ohio, Mark Hoenigman who does this as his primary method of moving very large trees.

Weller Tree Service had moved the trees successfully over the years when the underground parking garage was under repair. I sent Nikki a message offline with suggestions based on my experience moving up to 18 inch DBH trees.
