Radiant heat vs Nordic convection frost - in skyrocketing building developments
Moving large trees or planting nursery grown ones could be part of a global professional vision. In the Greater Montreal area, Urban planners, Architects, Landscape Architects, Forestry Engineers , Arborists, Consultants ssp., would gain to get real time streaming information making valuable planning when designing new areas or transforming old city scapes into multi vertical economic populated office bulging or skyrocket condos.
To date, the Ville-Marie Downtown Municipal Montreal urban planning deciders have not, will not consider the Provincial Heritage Ministry as of equal importance nor as partners when comes tree and heritage considerations. There is a need for more knowledge sharing among these services. Decisions are taken at high economic development levels, in silos and, tree benefits nor ways to increase their life expectancy are in the equation at the time of issuing building permits to real estate developers.
Few deciders have proposed bio-mass studies in regards to loss/replacement/benefits, nor macrobiotics related to urban trees although public health is so closely linked to viable environments in downtown living, working, commuting and playing areas. Although more than 350 000 tree plantings are targeted, The Canopy project throughout Montreal Island, no news to elevate tree benefits where people merge and spend half of a lifetime, or more.
Research hospitals, mega university centres as well as international schools are going back to the downtown core. One example is in the Ville-Marie borough, decision makers have forecasted at round tables and conferences that trees should not be more than 6´´ DHB and no more than 15 to 20’ as they will not survive in the high rise downtown area. Nothing to change, the planning is known and decided for the next twenty years. Narrow street and occasionally a small square with the minimal footage of cubic shrubs.
Who could speak of tree Survival in Montreal’s radiant downtown heat and convection frost ? Who can open the way to a transfert of knowledge up dated dialogue ?
There is a need to explore and diffuse real-time quality of life and public health issue to all the above mentioned professionals including Landscape Architects who play and important role implementing mineral and biological elements in urban developments.

One would have to determine if the post-transplant irrigation schedule was adequate and maintained.
The World Trade Memorial Plaza is an Urban Heat Island and exposing large transplanted trees to this sort of environment could be a recipe for failure.

It is my understanding that the City lost those trees that were moved at City Hall bare root and all. Weller Tree Service had moved the trees successfully over the years when the underground parking garage was under repair. I sent Nikki a message offline with suggestions based on my experience moving up to 18 inch DBH trees.

Actually the world trade trees were large by nursery standards about 10" dbh but all were nursery grown and prepared trees. The prep went on for many years and were very expensive. Not very applicable to the average project.
I would suggest looking at moving large trees bare root as was done at the Toronto city hall. I have heard of trees over 20” dbh being moved bare root.

You should look at the new World Trade Tower building in New York. They had some very large tree moves associated with that as part of the memorial.

Hi All
We are investigating moving a large elm tree.
It is a ~80 year old heritage tree with a canopy of 50’. We realize this is “Disney-esk” and not common in Western Canada; however, we are hoping that with the wealth of knowledge here, someone has experience and is willing to share ideas on the up-front costs and long term maintenance.
Thank you in advance!
Nikki
