[CANUFNET] Tree Implants

Hi Naomi,
In Montreal and Greater Montreal with the snow removal on sidewalks, mulch gets displaced. Ignifuge Wood chip is costly and not part of street tree planting budgets. Cedar or other mulches compost into growing unwanted weeds. The provincial government has stepped out of ragweed maintenance or bylaws, cities have not imposed the regulations/fines for large industrial-institutional- TOD landowners, let alone dense residential sectors. The most densely populated boroughs like Plateau Mont Royal, Rosemont - La Petite-Patrie, Mile-End-Park Extension, to name a few have started giving some care to renovated tree planting hubs but it’s not enough to ensure water needs for most trees in a short to medium term. There is so much matter to recycle-reuse, could Forestry engineer along with Industrial designers and Landscape architects investigate a product fitted to suit different tree needs in urban street tree programs ?

Hi Elaine:
Soil should never be bare. There should always be an organic layer.
Rather than this "spongy" construct you have mentioned, why wouldn't you just use composted wood chip mulch, 3-4 inches deep and set back from the buttress? Maybe you can engage the community where the trees are planted and just provide the mulch with instructions how to install.

Hello, Mass rain falls tend to harden de soil to a compacted surface where water run off is frequent taking especially in slight slopes. I would like to know if a spongy chip wood webbed mattress could retain and distribute water to the root system. Does such a product exist?

Is part of the problem lack of consistent normal amounts of rainfall? Im hearing that overly dry ground cannot absorb the mass amount of rain fallling at once.

We’ve used ace caps in the past briefly but that was close to 20 years ago. The wounding for an application is extreme in my opinion, the caps are large and there are many required for a treatment. There are very few (if any) applications where the wounding is a reasonable tradeoff for control of an insect for which the product is registered.

In Canada, Acecap 97 (PCP# 21568) is only registered for use on birch for the control of aphids (and specifically only green aphids, which is bizarre), and for birch leafminer. I'm not sure I would use such an invasive procedure, with an organophosphate insecticide for either pest, which rarely threaten the mortality of the birch.
On linden, it's only registered for use against elm spanworm.
The City of Edmonton did look into Acecaps many years ago when looking for something to use against cottony psyllid, but we wound up modifying the label of Orthene 75 with an injection instruction instead. That injection instruction has since been switched to Orthene 97% Soluble Granule Systemic Insecticide (PCP# 29499).

Hello,
Is this a Canadian website? Be careful that you use the product as intended on its Canadian label. Many things are not registered for use in Canada that are in the US.
I would also make sure that you see good hard data on the efficacy of the use for the target pest you need to control. Large wounds with this application. You need to make suer there will be a benefit that goes with that cost.

Subject: [CANUFNET] Tree Implants
Hello!
I was looking to get some insight, thoughts, or notes on peoples’ experience with a product called ACECAP (insecticide) and MEDICAP (nutrient supplement).
What caught my interest was how easy it appears to apply to the tree, as well as the wide hose of insects ACECAP is able to combat. MEDICAP looked interesting too as it seems like it can help with overall growth of trees in poor growing conditions.
Has any of you used this product before? If so, what specie of insects were you attempting to control and also how was your overall experience with it?
I am thinking about trying it on large lindens for aphid control and potentially birches for Bronze Birch Borer (just as a couple examples).
Here is the link to the product; http://acecap-medicap.com/Our%20Products/Our%20Products-MEDICAP-MD.htm<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Facecap-medicap.com%2FOur%2520Products%2FOur%2520Products-MEDICAP-MD.htm&data=05%7C01%7Celaine.ethier%40umontreal.ca%7C7249f256857e40159e2508da8115e9e3%7Cd27eefec2a474be7981e0f8977fa31d8%7C1%7C0%7C637964228927866405%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Zj8rrb99%2F%2FspbHCPUj1iHn7qxOiDgJOTfqPyY6D8Bqo%3D&reserved=0>
