RE: Coarse Wood Chip Mulch

My preference. Take a colander, fill up with your chips, pour water over top of the chips,
if water leaches out below, then your chips are not too deep. I like 3 to 5 inches under
trees; less if you have small plants or shrubs. I tell customers that its like a protein milkshake
for trees. The earthworm population rises substantially after the application of the chips.
85 % of our sites we leave the chips.

Bark mulch looks nice, but tends to repel water.
Chips certainly have a rougher, farmlike look to them.
It's a cultural thing. Glad to see that many municipalities here in the Lower Mainland
use the coarse wood chips on their roadway medians.

I've never really used shavings, so I can't comment.
I know that you want to be careful with sawdust, as too much choke out water
and maybe oxygen from penetrating into the soil. I know that the blueberry farmers
in our area use a thin coating under their plants.

Have you checked out Chip Drop (https://getchipdrop.com/). It's free and delivered.
I've used it several times and it is great. You have to be willing to take a whole truck load.

Hello,

I'm working with a group on the Sunshine coast who have limited access to quality mulch (in the needed quantity) to ue around their planted trees & shrubs. They would have access to:

* Wood shavings from a local mill comprised of fir and hemlock plus
some cedar & hardwood.
* Bark mulch
* Coarse wood chips

Any recommendations as to the preferable choice?

Thanks very much,

Laura Cottle

I would recommend using coarse wood chips as long as they are free of any oil or dyes.
