A good mix of course deciduous and coniferous tree mulch will do. The deciduous will break down faster and add nutrients to the soils, The coniferous chips will last a little longer, but may rob the soils of needed nutrients. A good mix for trees is 60% deciduous and 40% coniferous. A good layer, 10 to 15cm thick will do. Keep the woodchips away from the trunk, 3 to 5cm. As big a bed as you can get. 1.2 to 1.7 meters radius around the new trees. I like a little wider than the dripline.
Be carful of wood shavings from a mill. Wood shavings can compact too tightly around the tree cutting off air and water. Shavings may be a to fine.

I would recommend using coarse wood chips as long as they are free of any oil or dyes.

Hello,
I’m working with a group on the Sunshine coast who have limited access to quality mulch (in the needed quantity) to ue around their planted trees & shrubs. They would have access to:
- Wood shavings from a local mill comprised of fir and hemlock plus some cedar & hardwood.
- Bark mulch
- Coarse wood chips
Any recommendations as to the preferable choice?
Thanks very much,
Laura Cottle
