The Nuclear Disconnect - Part 1

A Mori IPSOS opinion poll just after Fukushima found that 67% of the French
public opposed new nuclear projects, and the long-standing support for
nuclear power in the French technocratic elite is showing signs of strain,
following Germanys phase out plan. The share price of French reactor vendor
Areva dropped by 25% in response to the German nuclear exit. It had already
fallen 14% following the Japanese crisis.

Internal Radioactive Emitters: invisible, tasteless and odorless

By Dr. Helen Caldicott

There is confusion and misunderstanding in the media, and amongst
politicians and the general public, about what nuclear accidents,
particularly the accident at Fukushima, will mean medically. It will be
useful to explain how radiation induces disease and what sort of radioactive
material is contained in a nuclear power plant.

Nuclear Power: When Morality Melts Down

By Paul McKay, author of Atomic Accomplice (I have copies for sale)

Currently, the world inventory of plutonium being stored at civilian nuclear
plants like Fukushima is about 2 million kilograms. A typical atomic weapon
requires 10 kilograms of plutonium.

Nuclear Stocks Remain Radioactive

Not only are there secular trends facing the industry, but the near-term

David Suzuki warns Tory scheme to cancel green energy plans is 'absolute
insanity'

In an exclusive interview with the Star, Suzuki made a rare foray into
partisan politics, warning it is "absolute insanity" for Progressive
Conservative Leader Tim Hudak to want to scrap wind and solar power
initiatives that the Tories claim are too expensive. "I don't get it,
because it's a job creator - I would have thought that the Conservatives
would be banging away at the need to create jobs"

Australia's PM shows political courage on climate change

Next July 1, the Australian government will put a price of $23 a tonne on
carbon for the country's 500 largest emitters. Three years later, the
government will convert that tax into an emissions trading scheme, or
cap-and-trade, whereby the government will mandate emission limits and let
the market set the price. The country's overall target will be to reduce
emissions by 80 per cent of the 2000 levels by 2050.

Experts forecast conservation chill

Local utilities may be reluctant to push incentives after energy board
turned down Toronto Hydro

Jack Gibbons of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance called the decision
"outrageously stupid." Gibbons said that the energy board is failing to
protect ratepayers by squelching conservation programs. Without
conservation, he said, demand grows. Then, expensive new generators must be
built, and customers pay for them through higher electricity bills.

The Last Mountain

Royal Theatre, 608 College St., Toronto

Canadian Premiere in Toronto, Fri. July 22, 7 p.m. - guest speaker Jack
Gibbons, OCAA

The mining and burning of coal is at the epicenter of America's struggle to
balance its energy needs with environmental concerns. Nowhere is that
concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but
passionate group of ordinary citizens are trying to stop Big Coal
corporations, like Massey Energy, from continuing the devastating practice
of Mountain Top Removal.
