No Nukes News

July 27, 2011

"Powerlessness and silence go together. We in this country should use our
privileged positions not as a shelter from the world's reality but as a
platform from which to speak. A voice is a gift. It should be cherished and
used." - Margaret Atwood, Canadian author and poet

"These pipes have more leaks than the Vancouver Canucks goaltending." - U.S.
Congressmen Edward J. Markey, referring to a report that 75% of nuclear
reactor sites have leaky pipes

Bloated Nuclear Projects Mean You Pay More for Electricity.

What is the True Cost of Nuclear Generated Electricity?

What are all the subsidies the nuclear industry receives, what are the ON
gov't plans for new nuclear, and what are the cost effective alternatives?

47 min. audio interview with Jack Gibbons, Chair of the Ontario Clean Air
Alliance:

How Much Will Tim Hudak's "Nuclear Tax" Cost You?

Past and present experience shows that if Hudak's nuclear plans are
implemented there will be billions in cost over-runs. So Hudak should fess
up: will he allow future nuclear cost overruns to be passedonto electricity
consumers? Yes or no.

Nuclear Energy, Ontario, Fukushima, Health and Sustainable Alternatives

IARC lists a number of radionuclides as proven causes of cancer including
those produced from the mining, milling, manufacturing and use of uranium
fission in nuclear power plants. It is now known that there is no safe dose
of radiation and even the smallest dose can cause cancer and other health
effects

Nuclear power's real chain reaction: spiralling costs

The new delays and bumper cost overruns of EDF's new reactor in France make
it very hard to believe that nuclear power can fulfill the promises its
supporters make

No Way to Assess Integrity of Buried Pipes at Nuclear Reactors

Lawmakers release nuclear safety investigation in wake of media report that
75% of nuclear reactor sites have leaky pipes

A story published today by the Associated Press found that tritium, a
radioactive form of hydrogen, has leaked from at least 48 of 65 nuclear
sites

We have a winner: British Columbia's carbon tax woos sceptics

British Columbia has shown the rest of Canada, a country with high carbon
emissions per head, that a carbon tax can achieve multiple benefits at
minimal cost. The carbon tax has been good for the environment, good for
taxpayers and it hasn't hurt the economy.

Quebec drives a wedge into national energy plan

Quebec is pledging its opposition to a national plan, while Ontario and
Alberta openly bicker about endorsing the oil sands as a sustainable
supplier of energy.

Biogas operation one step closer

The operation would see the manure produced from the approximately 175-head
dairy herd put into a large above-ground called a digester. The manure will
be mixed with other unwanted waste material like grease from restaurants.
Bacteria in the mixture works to break down organic matter, and by doing so,
produce methane gas. The methane is then used to run an engine and generator
to produce electricity. At peak times, the operation will produce 250
killowatts per hour of electricity.

<http://thelastmountainmovie.com/> The Last Mountain is a new and FANTASTIC
doc film about coal, and mountain top removal in Appalacia. Ontario buys
coal from Central Appalacia, and that likely means mountain top removal. If
we don't get more green energy, then we get more coal and nuclear. That's
our choice.

This film needs to get out into communities across ON and Canada;
pre-Ontario-election would be best. Do you have a good repertory theatre in
your community that might screen this? I can hook you up with the
distributors. They charge $150 per screening. CAPE has offered to help pay
this fee.

Let me know how I can help facilitate this. -angela at cleanairalliance.org
