Sitting on a carbon bomb

Under the ground in the B.C. Peace lies Canada’s largest potential source of greenhouse gases. Some want to leave it there. Others say we need the energy. One First Nation is uniquely positioned to play a key role.

Tell the Federal Government to Improve the New Draft Zero Emission Vehicle Regulations

The Gov’t of Canada is introducing Zero Emission Vehicle (“ZEV”) Regulations, like those that Quebec, B.C., California (and soon many other American states) already have. The feds are inviting public comment. It's important we engage because the automakers are lobbying hard to prevent, water down and delay these ZEV Regs.

Do you avoid conversations about climate change with friends, family, or co-workers for fear it will become confrontational, or grind to an awkward silence?  Guy Hanchet, president of For Our Grandchildren, will help us to practice the skills of listening, acknowledging, and effective engagement, in order to encourage more productive conversations about this important topic.

What Can We Do When Laws Harm Public Health?

Tues. Mar. 14, 1:30 p.m. ET

Dr. Tim Takaro is a Professor Emeritus and Physician-Scientist in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. His career has focused on environmental and occupational health and, in recent years, on the health impacts of climate change. This led him, as a citizen, to become a volunteer with Protect the Planet Stop TMX (the Trans-Mountain Pipeline Expansion). In November 2021 he was arrested for tree-sitting in an attempt to block further construction of TMX and in June 2022 he was sentenced for contempt of Court and jailed for three weeks. Tim will share some of his experience and deep consideration of the ethics of climate change and health action, including exploring an ethics framework for climate action in public health and the need to prepare some foundation for potential public health legal action on climate change.

PR 101

Wed. Mar. 15, 8 p.m. ET

Proportional representation (PR) makes every vote count - 10 % of the votes means 10% of the seats. It offers: a level of protection by making it harder for foreign (and domestic) actors to target their efforts effectively; PR can drastically reduce the number of safe seats and swing ridings; It offers voters a real choice between candidates of the same party. In every region, it makes more seats competitive for all major parties; PR ensures that no single party can win a majority government with 39% of the vote, including a party whose candidates were supported by foreign actors; It strengthens our democracy. Hosted by Fair Vote Canada.
