Emergency Rally - No Line 9! No Tar Sands in Ontario!

Mon. July 30, noon
7378 Yonge St, Thornhill

Calling all allies! Late on Friday afternoon, the National Energy Board approved the reversal Enbridges Line 9, opening Ontario and Quebec to a flood of toxic tar sands. We are rallying at the Minister of Ethical Oil Peter Kent’s office to say enough is enough! Respect Indigenous Rights! No Tar Sands in Ontario!

Both Six Nations and Aamjiwnaang First Nation have told the NEB that there has been no meaningful consultation from Enbridge regarding the potential impacts of reversing Line 9 for their communities. Enbridge and the Government of Canada are required to both consult and accommodate these concerns. This has not happened.

Earlier this month, Enbridge was found effectively criminally negligent in the 2010 Kalamazoo tar sands spill in Michigan, as they blatantly ignored safety concerns of aging pipelines for 5 years leading up to the spill. Line 9 is the Canadian extension of the same pipeline. Yet the NEB approves Line 9 blindly, following a pattern of rubber stamp’s on tar sands projects in Canada.

We demand intellect over ideology! We demand clean water over Enbridge profits!

Contested Futures: Tar Sands and Environmental Justice
Reports on front-line resistance, discussion, and the search for answers

Monday, July 30, 7 p.m.
OISE, Rm. 5150, 252 Bloor St. W.

Panelists:
-- Raul Burbano Common Frontiers, and Bryan Dale, Toronto Chapter Council of Canadians, reporting back from Rio+20 and the People’s Summit, Brazil.
– Ron Plain, Environmental Policy Analyst anti-pollution and activist from Aamjiwnaang environment group near Sarnia.
– John Henhawk, Six Nations of the Grand River activist and land defender.
Convenor: Eva Portello, Toronto Bolivia Solidarity

Environmental Justice is a global issue. The People’s Summit laid down a challenge to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which once again displayed government and corporate indifference to environmental needs. Environmental Justice is an issue in Canada. The tar sands in Alberta threaten water, land and human rights. Now tar sands oil may be coming to Sarnia, Ontario. Environmental Justice is an issue in Ontario, Six Nations activists, land defenders and allies are facing injunctions for their protection of environment and honouring of the Treaties.

We will have lots of time for discussion and strategizing, as we grapple with the key question: “What can we do?” The stakes are high for Ontario and humanity. All welcome.

Endorsers: International Solidarity Committee of the Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly * Science for Peace * Toronto Chapter, Council of Canadians * Toronto Bolivia Solidarity (OPIRG-Toronto action group) Center for Social Justice * Common Frontiers * Greenspiration * Indigenous Environmental Network * OPIRG-Toronto

No More Fukushimas Peace Walk

Join Buddhist nuns on their walk around Lake Ontario calling for a nuclear free future.

Wed. Aug. 1, 6 p.m. veggie potluck, 7:30 p.m. talk
Friends House, 60 Lowther (St. George subway)
Free, all welcome.

Lake Ontario is sacred to the First Nation people of US and Canada and yet it is being highly contaminated by 13 nuclear reactors on Canadian side and 4 reactors on US side (and the U.S. government wants to build two more). Native people have disproportionately high cancer rates due to higher exposure from nuclear radiation from nuclear waste dumping and uranium mining on Native lands. We walk together in love and solidarity for a nuclear free future. A more just, sustainable, and compassionate world built on respect for all living beings and for the earth that sustains us is possible now more than ever. Please join us to help make it a reality.
