Sheraton Centre Toronto, 123 Queen St. W

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) are in Toronto December 10 – 12. December 10th marks the international day for Human Rights. Idle No More is requesting that all our relations take part in a peaceful demonstration of solidarity. Please join us in this act of solidarity and be part of a great grassroots movement.

From your phone or computer

Revelations last week that the northern Saskatchewan community of Pinehouse is set to sign a so-called “Collaboration Agreement” with uranium giants Cameco and Areva have sparked outrage in the community due to terms of the agreement that residents say is a blatant attempt to silence opposition to the expansion of uranium mining in the area. Please take a few minutes to support this community-driven appeal!

Candlelight Walk and Vigil in memory of the children who will never again be coming home for Christmas

Thurs. Dec 13, 6 pm
NW corner of Dundas Square (near the holiday tree)
We will walk en masse to the headquarters of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario at 80 College St.
Please bring a (battery-powered) candle, a flashlight or a lantern. Some of us will carry signs.

We feel our children died because of medical negligence involving toxic/lethal pharmaceutical effects. We complained to the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Our complaints were challenged. We feel the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario did not take adequate disciplinary action. We feel the CPSO protected their own. The CPSO is the self-regulating body for the medical profession. Yet its mandate is to "serve and protect the public interest." We feel the CPSO is no longer committed to patient safety and is no longer capable of serving the public interest. We want the CPSO investigated and replaced by an independent organization not controlled by physician members.

We are the Coalition for Physician and Surgeon Oversight. Read our horror stories at www.cpso.co. Share your own story. Take action. This vigil is our first public event. If you want to help change the way the College of Physicians and Surgeons conducts itself, join our walk and vigil.

A People's History of the War of 1812
with humourist and storyteller John Bell

Thursday, December 13, 7 pm - 9 pm
Room CL3, Mississauga Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Road West, Mississauga

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has spent at least $28 million glorifying the War of 1812, as part of his ongoing campaign to rebrand Canada as a warrior nation. There is a lot to remember and celebrate from this history, but it isn't in the official Harper story: rampant corruption, incompetence, and greed among the rulers on both sides of the border, and a powerful urge to resist war by working people in the Canadas and in the battleground states.

Sleep Out at Glen Murray's Office: Stop the cut to Community Start Up

Thursday, December 13, 6pm: Meal and Rally; 7pm – 8am: SLEEP OUT
514 Parliament St (at Winchester)

*Bring your sleeping bags and mats *Prepare to sleep-out all night or come stop-by for as long as you can *Breakfast and Coffee the next morning at 8am

The Provincial Liberal Government is set to cut the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) January 1st, 2013. The CSUMB is a housing benefit for people on social assistance (OW and ODSP). For thousands of people across the Province every month, it is literally the difference between being homeless on the streets or being able to get a place to live. The cut to this benefit will mean that many more people will be made homeless and a time in Toronto when so many shelter beds have been lost and the shelter system itself is in crisis. We must STOP THIS CUT!

Glen Murray is MPP for Toronto Centre which includes the 'Downtown East', one of the poorest neighborhoods in all of Canada with a high concentration of homelessness. Welfare and disability rates are already impossible to survive on as this government cuts away at more and more benefits and the rates of income keep falling. Today welfare rates are almost 60% below where they should be, meaning a measly $606/month for a single person. Murray is campaigning to take over running the Province from McGuinty. We challenge Murray that this is the despicable legacy he
is a part of and we demand he take action to stop the cut to Community Start-Up.

Alternatives to Capitalism Workshop
with Manuel Larrabure and Thomas Ponniah

Thursday, December 13, 6:30pm
CSI Annex, Second Floor, Meeting Room #1, 720 Bathurst Street (S. of Bloor)

One of the central tasks of remaking socialism for the 21st century is insisting upon and exploring alternatives to capitalism. This has been the importance of the Venezuelan Revolution, and the politics emerging in the Bolivarian bloc of states. The recent re-election of Hugo Chavez has led to further radical proposals for socialization. But these require careful study and debate given the experience of Venezuela and the balance of class forces inside the country and the region. One of the central theorists of the new theory of the transition to socialism has been Michael Lebowitz, who draws extensively on the developments in Venezuela in his thinking on ‘real human development’. This meeting will for discussion of these issues in light of the new Venezuela programme.

The Peace Maker - A Play Reading with Music

Friday, Dec 14, 7:30 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (Bloor and Bathurst)

A rehearsal presentation of a portion of the play The Peace Maker written by Natasha Greenblatt and directed by Jennifer Brewin. To be followed by a discussion moderated by playwright Arthur Milner. Sophie is a young Jewish idealist from Canada who travels to Israel on a "Birthright" trip to make sense of the conflict. After the trip she volunteers at a music school in Palestine, and soon finds herself inspired to make a difference by bringing together people from both sides of the wall. Accompanied by a live band that plays Klezmer, traditional Arabic music and high school band classics, The Peace Maker explores the difference between peace and justice and the complex notion of identity in the Middle East. The Peace Maker premieres at the Next Stage Festival in January 2013.
