Just saying “no” to antibacterial hand soaps
To mark this year's Healthy Schools Day, the Canadian Partnership for Children's Health & Environment (CPCHE) is encouraging schools and child care centres to discontinue the use of antibacterial hand soaps, especially those containing triclosan. The federal government considers triclosan toxic, a decision based on preliminary assessments that found the substance harms aquatic plants and animals.

Stop Line 9: the Ongoing Movement and Green Alternatives

Oil giant Enbridge wants to use the 38-year old Line 9 pipeline to pump tar sands through Toronto--promoting oil spills and climate change, devastating indigenous communities, and diverting resources from green jobs alternatives. After the Harper government destroyed environmental regulation, the National Energy Board rubber stamped Line 9 and the Ontario Liberal government has refused to even conduct an environmental assessment.  But the movement against Line 9 continues. Last year hundreds rallied against Line 9 and thousands signed petitions demanding an environmental assessment. This year the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation have appealed the NEB decision, and the City of Toronto has demanded an environmental assessment.

National Day of Action, Toronto: No Tar Sands, No Fracking, No Line 9!

Start at Nathan Phillips Square (City Hall, Queen and Bay)
On May 10th people from coast to coast to coast will be rallying to defend communities from pipelines, dirty energy projects like tar sands and fracking, and runaway climate change, while standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities on the front-line of struggles from BC to New Brunswick. In Toronto we have an opportunity to play our part in stopping tar sands expansion by stopping Line 9 - a 38 year old pipeline built for regular oil which is set to transport tar sands dilbit and fracked Bakken crude from Sarnia to Montreal. Due to its contents, the pipeline has a 90% likelihood of rupture, threatening the most densely populated corridor in the country, including 18 Indigenous communities who have not been properly consulted. Not only does Line 9 put at risk drinking water, sensitive ecosystems, and human health in Ontario, it will allow for tar sands expansion which will further poison downstream Indigenous communities, accelerate climate change, exacerbate extreme weather conditions, and divert resources from green job alternatives.
