Hello everyone,

The Alliance to End Homelessness along with many others participated in the
Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Consultation on Rental Housing. Now your
help is needed to get more information to the Commission.

The Commission is encouraging those of you working in emergency shelters,
involved in housing support or in providing housing to help by completing
the two online surveys (both in Eng & Fr).

The good news is that the purpose of the tenant and housing provider surveys
is for the Commission to hear from people who might not read the background
paper or might not want to answer the questions in the consultation report
but who have much to tell the Commission about your personal experiences or
those of people you work with.

The Commission has advised us that it would be appropriate for shelter staff
and housing support workers to fill in both surveys, being mindful of the
perspective that you will be providing in each.

Tenant survey:

This survey is aimed at tenants and those who work with tenants or others
who would be tenants but for barriers (e.g. those who are homeless). You
could describe the experiences of a homeless person or someone that they
have been in contact with and describe the barriers to housing that person
has experienced. Or you could provide a summary of what you have seen so
many people experience, based on their own direct knowledge.

Housing provider survey:

This survey is aimed at providers of rental housing. As was noted in the
consultation meetings, individuals can highlight issues for us arising in
relation to the topic of housing, more broadly. The survey would be a means
for the shelter operators to describe the challenges you face. You might
talk about your personal experiences with issues such as zoning and barriers
to the creation of supportive housing, NIMBYism or challenges in providing
accommodation given conflicting needs and lack of funding – or anything else
that you think it is important that the Commission know about in this
process of consulting on human rights and rental housing.

Please note that the topic of domiciliary units came up in some of the
meetings and this is an area that is now identified as one that the
Commission will need to look into further - it would be helpful if you or
others could assist by clearly outlining the issues, relevant regulations
and legislation and key human rights challenges relating to such units in
written submissions or in the surveys.

Your help getting information to the Commission is greatly appreciated!

With thanks,

Lynne
