Now is the time to contact your councillor, if you haven’t already done so.
Please see our “key messages” below more ideas of what to say.
Next meeting of People for a Better Ottawa: Friday, December 7, 9:30 AM,
Centretown Community Health Centre, 420 Cooper Street (just west of Bank).
Contact your Councillor!
Find your Councillor by visiting HYPERLINK
"http://www.ottawa.ca"www.ottawa.ca or by calling 311. Tell them:
* Do the right thing and protect community services!
* Cutting city jobs means cutting programs by stealth – we don’t want
cuts by stealth!
* Let’s be realistic – we have a revenue problem, not a spending
problem! Let’s lobby the province to take responsibility for the programs
it has downloaded over the past ten years. And let’s lobby the federal
government to provide more direct support to municipalities.
Key messages:
WE'RE CALLING ON CITY COUNCIL TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND PROTECT COMMUNITY
SERVICES
The people of Ottawa expect leadership from our elected representatives to
make the tough decisions that will address social needs, protect vital
services and protect our quality of life. People are prepared to pay for the
services our community needs.
WE'RE CALLING ON CITY COUNCIL TO REJECT BUDGET CUTS BY STEALTH
Laying off city staff or setting global savings targets -- without any
specifics on what or where those reductions are will result in reduced city
services and negative community impacts -- and we won't know what those cuts
are until they actually happen.
WE'RE CALLING ON CITY COUNCIL TO BE REALISTIC -- WE HAVE A REVENUE PROBLEM,
NOT A SPENDING PROBLEM
Other cities -- like Mississauga -- have been forced to increase property
taxes to deal with the critical lack of revenues cities have to deliver
their mandated services. Ottawa already spends less on most city services
than most urban areas in Ontario.
We want a balanced approach that recognizes our city’s social and physical
needs.
We need councilors to show leadership and do the right thing.
