Bonjour Alex,
That's good news for folks, kind of, however "We" here still believe and advocate that the ideas and models such as "Zero-fare Public Transport Systems" are do-able herein Ottawa and Ontario. And your 5% increase will continue to climb in costings and negative dirty air illness impacts to citizens and environment, alike. Zero-fare Public Transport Systems would benifit ALL Citizens in many longterm healthy ways. So too, it would be an economic plus to the "Public Good" and a greener City and region. There is much information on the matter out in the world already and the problem of very dirty air is not going to disappear. Please, give "Zero-fare Public Transport" serious consideration in your City Plannings, as per building more sustainable and green communities. Truly, there are many who make use of the "la langue de bois" (the language of wooden words) when speaking of "Greener" and more sustainable healthy Cities -- this will not do. Again, "Zero-fare Transit" is a do-able vision of quite pressing civic needs. Be well et Megweetch/Thank you.

Sincèrement, Ayataskisiw Cooperative.

  Hi folks:

Just to belay an over-reaction, Mr. Mercier was referring to the discounts offered to the Student Bus Pass and to the Eco-Pass, not to the Community Bus Pass. However, most bus fares will be going up by 5% (including the Community Bus Pass) according to the proposed City budget.

    Hello Community Pass Supporters,

I don't mean to alarm people because I don't have much information yet, but the Ottawa Sun carried an article yesterday (Nov. 27th) which indicated that Alain Mercier, Director of Transit Services was suggesting that one of the City options being considered to deal with Ottawa's budget woes is"chopping bus pass discount rates for students and other users". This was not an option that was put forth in the draft budget, as far as I can tell. I'm trying to find out more information, but have been unable to talk to the people I need to speak to. I will send more info when I know.

In the meantime, however, it would not hurt if people wanted to call or email their Councillor and the Chair of Transit Committee Alex Cullen and the Mayor. Tell them that in no way should discounted bus passes be cut. Tell them your stories of how the Community Pass has helped you or someone you know.

Attached is the contact list for City Council.

Please circulate this note to others who use the Community Pass.

Thank you for your help. <<City of Ottawa Council 2007.doc>>
