Update from OCVO – Mise à jour de COBO

1.	Pro Bono Students Canada is a network of law schools, law students,
community organizations and lawyers all working together to solve
traditionally unmet legal problems. PBSC encourages students and legal
professionals to volunteer in their communities to provide underrepresented
and disadvantaged individuals, groups, and organizations with pro bono legal
services and access to justice. PBSC facilitates these efforts by matching
volunteer law students with non-profit organizations, government agencies,
individuals, and other public interest groups to provide information and
research in a legal context. All student work is supervised by a volunteer
lawyer.

How can PBSC help you?

As an organization, you may have legal questions but lack the financial
resources to hire legal counsel. Pro Bono student volunteers have the skills
to research your legal issues at no cost to your organization. We will match
you with students who meet the skill and interest requirements for your
projects. Student work must be supervised by a lawyer. If your organization
does not have a lawyer on staff or on its board, PBSC can find a lawyer to
supervise the student’s work at no cost to you.

2.	The Canadian Subsidy Directory is a reference dedicated to providing
information leading to financial help, subsidies, grants, loans, joint
ventures or any funding program offered by Canadian governments,
associations and foundations.

This publication provides links to thousands of grants, loans and programs
available across Canada for businesses, non-profit organizations and
personal projects. The Directory provides detailed contact information along
with a description of each grant, loan or program. This publication is
offered in both print and electronic versions.

3.	CRA Fundraising Guidelines – Ontario Nonprofit Network’s Briefing
Note to the Field: As many of you may be aware, Revenue Canada has proposed
new fundraising guidelines. These guidelines have serious implications for
small and mid-size charities in particular. Some of the ways the guidelines
may affect your organization include:

*        impacting your ability to raise funds from the general public;

* imposing a significant additional administrative burden and
associated costs;

*         impacting your ability to earn income and;

* possibly losing your charitable registration for high fundraising
costs over which you may have little control or choice.

To assist the nonprofit sector in giving informed feedback, HYPERLINK
"http://www.bettermail.ca/ct/440/52189/2791103/c599cbecb186c148b2ea99a32b5e3
cc8"ONN has prepared an in-depth brief to the field detailing the practical
implications and our recommendations. Another very interesting brief has
been written by Man, Mus and Carter in the latest Charity Law Bulletin
entitled HYPERLINK
"http://www.bettermail.ca/ct/440/52189/2791104/c599cbecb186c148b2ea99a32b5e3
cc8""Be Careful What You Ask For" and it includes a legal analysis and
summary of the guidelines.

Please respond to the CRA consultation and please encourage others to get
active and respond. A little effort now may help a great deal in the long
run.

Submissions should be sent by August 31st to: HYPERLINK
