FYI, please email and phone Councillors to support a socially and fiscally
responsible budget.
We understand Council has so far approved only two of our three Budget
requests not to cut by deferral the money to improve housing and
homelessness services.
Still deferred - 1. Keep the $1,750,000 for the Tenant Resource Centre and
housing support workers in the Budget because it will help keep individuals
and families housed in an economic downturn so they avoid becoming homeless.
35,000 Ottawa households live on annual incomes of $18 thousand or less and
are at risk of becoming homeless because of bad economic times. An economic
downturn hurts many employed people; very few of the next 35,000 households
getting by on incomes between $18-$32 thousand a year have the savings to
ride out bad times. We fully expect to see some of these families too at the
shelters next year, perhaps more than once.
In Budget now - 2. Keep the $1,000,000 to convert up to 100 existing
subsidized social housing units into targeted supportive housing for people
with mental illnesses and addictions in the Budget. In just 3 years this
covers off shelter costs for 100 chronically homeless people.
In Budget now - 3. Keep the $500,000 budgeted for the 3rd year of 10-year
Community Funding Sustainability plan to assist health, recreation and
social service groups, including Day Programs helping the homeless and those
at risk of homelessness, which will be needed more than ever in a recession.

Importance: High
Dear members of People for a Better Ottawa ACT NOW AGISSONS MAINTENANT!
Please respond to this urgent request from Councillor Diane Deans:
With Mayor OBrien on CFRA this morning campaigning against his own City
Council, citizens in Ottawa are bombarding the city with emails and phone
lines with complaints about the decision to reject cuts to arts, culture,
childcare, recreational and community programs and accept the 4.9 % tax
increase.
Councillors are appealing to us to email, fax or phone in support for the
adoption of a socially and fiscally responsible budget. Our Councillors
supported us and now its time to support them!!!!!
Écrivez sans tarder pour féliciter les conseillers municipaux qui ont votés
pour un budget juste, équitable et humain.
