Centre 454 to participate in CBC's Share Central 2008
 
 
Centre 454, one of Ottawa's longest-serving social service providers,
has been selected by CBC radio as a 2008 participant in Share Central,
the annual fund-raising drive for local charities. 
 
With a live broadcast from Centre 454 during the CBC's morning drive-in
show, Ottawa Morning will highlight the volunteers, staff, and
activities that make Centre 454 a destination for Ottawa's homeless.
The Centre is a non-profit, spiritually founded and based multi-service
centre established in 1954 in the heart of Ottawa's ByWard Market. Its
Day Program provides practical, emotional and spiritual support to all
in need through counselling, education, outreach, advocacy, referral,
crisis intervention and recreation.
 
"We provide a safe and vital gathering place in our community, 7 days a
week for people who are homeless or on low-incomes", said Mary-Martha
Hale, Director of Centre 454. "We hope that our participation in Share
Central will serve to raise awareness of Ottawa's most vulnerable within
our community." 
 
The Centre serves those looking for assistance with the daily
necessities of life that most people take for granted, including access
to telephones, showers, hygiene supplies, laundry facilities,
newspapers, and mail.
 
"We've grown to a population of over 300 people each day," said Ms.
Hale.  "We depend on volunteer, donations and financial support from the
public to meet this need - we are so thankful that the CBC is engaged in
supporting the community with initiatives like Share Central."
