tabled in Ontario Legislature

 

Cheri DiNovo, the MPP for Parkdale – High Park (Toronto), has introduced a
bill in the Ontario Legislature on Thursday that would enshrine in Ontario
law the right to housing. I was delighted to be invited by Cheri to attend
this historic event at the Legislature. Private Members’ Bills don’t have
much of a chance of passing, but there is considerable momentum around this
issue, especially with the recent fact-finding mission of the United
Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, and the debate
of his indictment of Canadian housing policies and funding at the United
Nation’s Human Rights Council in mid-March. In addition, the Ontario Human
Rights Commission is expected to release in the very near future the first
of several reports from its consultation on housing rights last year,
putting housing rights squarely on the provincial agenda. 

 

A copy of the text of the bill, signed by Cheri, is attached.
