more about housing'

 

Housing was raised during Question Period on Wednesday and Thursday in the
Ontario Legislature. On Tuesday, the Ontario government delivered its latest
budget, which contained zero new dollars for new affordable homes, $100
million for repairs to the province’s aging social housing stock, and
funding cuts of 6% to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. 

 

On Wednesday, when he was asked about the lack of new dollars for new
affordable homes, Ontario Housing Minister Jim Watson seemed to confuse the
dollars for repair of existing homes (vitally important spending, of course,
but only a modest step to covering a social housing repair bill that most
experts put at $1 billion to $1.3 billion) with the non-existent funding for
new homes.

 

On Thursday, Minister Watson didn’t appear at Question Period, so Premier
Dalton McGuinty was asked why there were no dollars for new affordable
homes. He talked about “slow economic growth” and previous government
announcements, adding “there is a need, obviously, for us to do more in the
area of housing.”
