5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Monday, October 6th 

Join a GATHERING at the Anti-Poverty Monument 

Outside Ottawa City Hall on Lisgar St. between Elgin & Cartier

            With food supplied by the Salvation Army in Ottawa 

Speakers at the Gathering

Hon. Flora MacDonald, former MP (Kingston & the Islands), who served as
Canada’s Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1979 - 1980, will share
highlights of her experiences of humanitarian work to reduce poverty in
Afghanistan.

Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International (AI), Canada will
speak about the importance of social and economic human rights to end
poverty.

Dorothy O’Connell, anti-poverty activist and playwright in the City of
Ottawa, for whose work this poverty monument was dedicated in 2004, will
speak to the importance of federal election candidates stating how their
political parties intend to reduce poverty in Canada.

Dick Stewart, former Social Services Commissioner Regional Municipality of
Ottawa-Carleton, will moderate the brief comments offered by the three
speakers.

5-Party Federal Election Debate 

on Poverty and Inequality

Dominion-Chalmers United Church, in The Sanctuary, at 355 Cooper Street at
O’Connor

On OC Transpo Bus Routes # 1, 4 and 7.  

Wheelchair access is from both the Lisgar St. and the Cooper St. entrances. 

Free parking at the church and on side streets.


Poverty and rising inequality in Canada are major concerns for Canadians in
this federal election.  To put a spotlight on these critical issues, a
coalition of over 20 social justice organizations is pleased to invite the
public to a five-party debate, in both official languages and with sign
language interpretation.  Parties invited to this debate are the Bloc
Québécois, Conservative Party of Canada, Green Party of Canada, Liberal
Party of Canada and New Democratic Party of Canada.  The moderator will be
CBC radio broadcaster, Adrian Harewood.
