What is CBR?
Community-based research (CBR) takes place in community settings and is
a collaborative approach to research
that equitably involves all partners in the research process and
recognizes the unique strengths that each brings.
CBR begins with a research topic of importance to the community with the
aim of combining knowledge and
action for social change to improve the health of the community. CBR
initiatives are action-oriented and intent on
effecting real change through the policies and practices at local and
regional levels.
(Wellesley Institute, 2008)

Why is the concept of CBR important?
We need to work together to identify common issues for effective service
delivery to our community. CBR is an
equitable way to work with our community through partnerships with
individuals, organizations and universities in
order to respond to funders' pressure to rationalize services while
facing a shrinking supply of staff and the impact
of increasing client demand, particularly from aging boomers. Non-profit
organizations are asked to do more with
less. We are affected by government cutbacks. CBR starts with the
formation of alliances, coalitions and
partnerships as a way for the community and other stakeholders to use
participatory action research to find
solutions to these challenges and overcome them.

What will these workshops offer you?
The workshops will provide you with the necessary skills to implement
CBR, creative ways to resolve conflicts of
interests, networking and leadership skills, and the ability to
influence the research agenda on community issues.
Successful partnerships require leadership and networking abilities as
well as different skill sets from the
community. The CBR workshops will give you the understanding of the
principles to develop effective
partnerships and maintain your organization’s autonomy while working
together.
