Hi Friends:

Rising energy costs are threatening Canada`s low income households as never
before – increasing poverty, undermining housing affordability and causing
homelessness. With another winter looming ahead, Canada lacks a strategy to
address this serious social issue – unlike our neighbours in the US and UK
who have longstanding national programs to retrofit low income households
and permanently reduce energy costs by an average of 30 per cent. We can`t
wait any longer – it`s time for action in Canada! I personally invite you to
join me and 200 other delegates from across Canada at a unique conference
hosted by Green Communities Canada in Toronto, September 29-October 1, to
develop a national roadmap for tackling energy poverty through energy
efficiency. This highly interactive conference will bring together promising
solutions emerging from Canada`s provinces, cities, utilities, housing and
environmental groups – and we`ll learn from our American friends about their
30-year national history of delivering low-income energy efficiency
programs. You`ll also hear how energy efficiency is a cost-effective tool in
tackling poverty and creating sustainable, green jobs in your community ($1
invested generates $23 in energy and related benefits, vs $3 in benefits
from bill relief cheques).

I invite you to provide a poster presentation (please complete the attached
poster session form) to showcase the work you are doing on this theme – it`s
free, and will be a popular destination at the conference. Toronto Community
Housing will also provide a tour (included in your registration fee) so you
can see first-hand how North America`s largest social housing provider is
embracing energy efficiency. If you require financial assistance, please
complete and return the attached financial assistance request. Call or email
me if you have any questions. Hope to see you soon in Toronto!
