Meet Leilani Farha and Bruce Porter, April 30

Bruce and Leilani co-ordinated cross-country meetings in January with 125 NGOs and Indigenous organizations to identify the key human rights issues of concern to civil society in Canada. They then went to Geneva to brief state delegations on those issues prior to Canada's first ever UPR at the UN Human Rights Council on February 3.

The UPR is a new procedure that covers all aspects of international human rights, including all treaties ratified by Canada. So the review ranged from economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to housing or the right to an adequate standard of living, to civil and political rights such as the effects of counter-terrorism measures.

A total of 68 recommendations were made to Canada on a wide range of issues. A dominant concern was Canada's failure to ensure effective mechanisms of accountability and legal protection of fundamental human rights, particularly economic and social rights. Canada must inform the United Nations in June which of the recommendations it accepts and will implement.

Bruce and Leilani will discuss how NGOs and parliamentarians can take advantage of this critical opportunity for a renewed commitment to two human rights priorities: implementing Canada's international human rights obligations and to addressing widespread poverty, homelessness and hunger in Canada within a human rights framework.
