Hello,

 

As you may know, the McGuinty government introduced legislation yesterday that, if passed by the Legislature, would enshrine Ontario's commitment to long-term poverty reduction in Ontario.

 

The proposed Poverty Reduction Act, 2009 meets one of the commitments we made in our poverty reduction strategy, Breaking the Cycle.  The strategy and this legislation are about creating a province where people have more opportunity to achieve their full potential and contribute to a prosperous and healthy Ontario.  

 

The proposed act would require our government and future governments to maintain a meaningful and measurable long-term poverty strategy.  Future governments would be mandated to develop a new strategy every five years, which would have to include: a specific poverty reduction target; initiatives to help address poverty; and indicators to measure success.

 

The legislation would also mandate annual reporting on the strategy - including government activities that support the strategy and information on poverty reduction indicators.  The proposed act, if passed, would also require that before any new strategies are developed, the government must hold consultations, and specifically ensure that those living in poverty are part of that process. 

 

Thank you for your commitment to reducing poverty in Ontario.  I look forward to continuing to work with you as we move forward with this legislation, and with our efforts to break the cycle of poverty.
