Subject: Ottawa Tenants Conference
Hi, Lynne,
Could you please post this info?
Thanks,
Rob MacDonald
Please find attached both English anf French posters for the third annual
Ottawa Tenants' Conference which takes place on Saturday, November 28th at
City Hall.
The Tenants' Conference is a unique event designed to bring tenants
together to provide education and a forum for tenants to share their
stories. The conference is for tenants who rent on the private market or
live in social housing. The goal of the conference is to help mobilize and
empower tenants while at the same time offering practical advice to those
having problems with their landlords. Our guest speaker this year is Yutaka
Dirks who is the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator from the Advocacy Centre
for Tenants-Ontario
The conference will have a panel of experts from the City of Ottawa
discussing how the municipality can help tenants who are experiencing
difficulties with maintenance. Representatives from the departments of
Health, Property Standards, and Fire Prevention will offer advice on how to
make an effective complaint to the City when landlords do not carry out
their responsibilities. There will also be a Tenants' Panel consisting of
several tenants who have enforced their rights in their buildings and had
positive outcomes.
The day will also include various workshops on tenants' rights and issues
of concern to tenants. Lawyers will be available in the morning to give
free legal advice to tenants wishing to discuss specific problems with their
landlords. In addition, all participants will receive a Resource Kit of
practical information pertaining to tenants' rights and services available
to assist them in the community.
The conference runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm at City Hall located at 110
Laurier Avenue. A free lunch is provided and light refreshments will be
served throughout the day. Admission is free but tenants must register in
advance by calling 613-563-4532, extension 456. Tenants should indicate if
they require assistance with bus tickets or daycare arrangements.
The conference is being organized by Housing Help, Ottawa's Community Legal
Clinics, the Housing Loss Prevention Network, and tenants in your
neighbourhood.
For further information, please contact Rob MacDonald at 613-563-4532,
extension 226.
