Youth Caucus @ CHRA Congress 2010:  Building a Foundation for Housing’s Future
Purpose:
CHRA, during its strategic planning process in 2008, identified the need to develop future young housing leaders.  Creating a “Youth Caucus” at Congress will directly link to these efforts and will also provide meaningful programming that appeals to the younger generation.
Pan-Canadian Youth Caucus:
A youth steering committee will be established with representation from around Canada , including representatives from the SHQ (Youth chair from host city), CHRA head office, CMHC, the West, Central Canada , Atlantic Canada and Québec. There will also be a local working group based in Québec City .
Goal:
Our goal is to attract 50 youth (29 and under) to attend this year’s event on site and that a further 50 webcast seats be provided to youth who cannot attend in person.
In order to make this meaningful, we need to incorporate specific programming for all youth delegates, which could include as an example:
·         A youth “lounge” for the youth delegates at Congress. A place to hang out, with the use of computers etc.
·         A youth social activity (bar night) organized to coincide with the International Dinner
·         A tour of a youth specific projects
·         The use of social networking tools leveraged (prior to and during the Congress) including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the CHRA Youth Portal to create a forum for open conversation
·         Youth lunch at the hotel with potential guest speakers discussing Employment in the housing industry
·         Youth rapporteurs for sessions
·         Dissemination of experiences to the general assembly at the closing of Congress
·         Direct involvement in the Congress by volunteering at one programming element
·         Direct involvement at the proposed Youth workshop
We are aiming for as diverse a group as possible to plan and participate in this initiative and will seek a balance among youth, with respect to:
·         Regional representation
·         Linguistic representation
·         Gender
·         Cultural diversity
·         Students
·         Young workers
·         Clients (lived experience)
·         Aboriginal representation
·         Representation from all sectors of the affordable housing continuum: Social housing, green, homelessness, shelters etc
Candidates who are interested in joining the steering committee that will lead the planning of this initiative will ideally be within organizations that are members of CHRA and will have organizational support behind them in order to attend the congress and participate in 4-6 planning meetings that will take place via web conference.
If you are or know of someone that would be interested in joining this committee, please send all expressions of interest to Sebastien Provost at info at chra-achru.ca  613-594-3007 ext 12. The deadline for submissions is Monday March 1, 2010 and the first meeting of this committee will take place via web conference the second week of March (exact time to be confirmed).
