DOWNTOWN DECLARATION

Canadian Business Improvement Areas/Districts and the International
Downtowns Association (IDA)

 

A NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR CANADA'S DOWNTOWNS 

NEW FEDERAL ROLE IN DOWNTOWN/URBAN ISSUES AND INITIATIVES

 

The Canadian Issues Task Force ("CITF") of the International Downtown
Association ("IDA") has undertaken a cross Canada survey of Downtown
stakeholder organizations with regard to the role of the Federal
government in a unified and comprehensive strategy for Canada's
urban/downtown areas.  Some of the stakeholder groups include local
business improvement areas/districts, (BIA's/BID's) municipal
governments and associations, business associations with a focus on
urban cores and related groups and individuals with expertise in the
area of housing, mental health, public safety and municipal
infrastructure and funding.

 

SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS AND MAJOR FINDINGS:

 

Downtown organizations in every region of Canada have submitted their
key concerns in four (4) major areas of downtown/urban issues:

 

1.                   National Infrastructure/reinvestment;

2.                   National crime prevention/public safety;

3.                   National affordable and social housing (with mental
health and addictions support);

4.                   Economic development.

 

Later in this Declaration a summary of the themes of the submissions is
presented in each of these topic areas.  (A consolidated un-edited
compilation of submissions is available.)
