Message from Alliance to End Homelessness (ATEH)
Chair Marion Wright and Vice Chair Dan Sabourin
Hello listserv members,
Last Friday, the ATEH Steering Committee decided to move the regular full
Alliance members' meeting to Friday September 10th (instead of next week on
May 19). We'll have more details to send you early July. That doesn't mean
of course that Alliance work has slowed down.
The Municipal Election seems to be on everyone's mind!
It's very likely that one important topic at the Sept 10th meeting will be
concerted efforts to increase the chances that the issue of "ending
homelessness by increasing affordable housing" will have an effective impact
on the policies the new Council will go forward with after the Election Day.
In the meanwhile, following up on our strategic support of Peter Hume's
motion to add 5 million to the city's homelessness spending, the ATEH
Steering Committee has already begun meeting with incumbents and some new
candidates about the 2009 Report Card on Ending Homelessness in Ottawa, the
targets to end homelessness in 10 years and our five election action
requests on pg. 13 (see below). The ATEH Public Affairs Working Group will
be meeting soon to consider other actions and there'll be more on that soon
too.
1. Mayoral Debate
* The Steering Ctte is excited to be joining in with community partners
on a Mayoral Debate planned for early October. Watch for more on this soon.
2. Using the ATEH's 5 Questions for Council Candidates
* We'd like to request that you take these questions, especially 1, 2 &
3, into settings where planning for election events is underway (i.e., other
community networks or groups, community associations, Ward-based
all-candidate meetings, etc.).
* Our goal here is that at least one of these questions relating to
"ending homelessness by increasing affordable housing" is asked of all
Council candidates at most events where they speak. ATEH is committed to
this solution and it needs to be one of the top 3 or 4 campaign issues
throughout the election period. (As many of you will recall from past
campaigns, once candidates meetings are underway it's nearly impossible to
ask our questions from the floor so advance work with meeting hosts must be
done.)
If you are already involved in planning something where you can help to get
the questions asked, please let Lynne Browne know at lbrowne at ysb.on.ca as
she will be keeping a list.
Thank you for your support and help,
Marion Wright and Dan Sabourin
FYI RC pg 13, What Can City Council Do?
Municipal election yeaR!
Ask your candidates if they will act to:
1. Increase affordable housing by 1,000 units each year and invest more
municipal resources.
2. Reinvest the nearly $80 million dollars being removed from the
property tax base by 2018 in new affordable housing and other social
services. Some financial responsibility for social services infrastructure
is being uploaded back to the province.
3. Reduce the number of individuals in emergency shelters by 500 each
year.
4. Actively abide by Human Rights Policy on Rental Housing and
NIMBYism.
5. Ensure the City's Poverty Reduction Strategy is successfully
implemented with appropriate funding.
