Subject: [nhhn-can] Canadian Chamber of Commerce adopts resolution for
national homelessness plan

Please see below for news that the Burnaby Board of Trade Resolution
calling for a national homelessness plan was adopted by the Canadian
Chamber of Commerce this morning.

The Canadian C is Canada's largest business organization, with more than
300 local chambers and boards of trade and more than 175,000 individual
businesses.

The Burnaby resolution focuses on the segment of insecurely-housed
Canadians who are without a permanent home. The Wellesley Institute's
Precarious Housing in Canada 2010
<http://www.wellesleyinstitute.com/news/affordable-housing-news/new-repo
rt-precarious-housing-in-canada-2010/> sets out a practical 10-year
national housing plan for low, moderate and middle-income Canadians who
are poorly housed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Victory for Burnaby Board of Trade -

Canadian Chamber of Commerce will lobby for

National Plan on Homelessness

Burnaby Board of Trade policy resolution on homelessness passed at
Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Gatineau, Quebec

BURNABY, BC - Canada's largest and most influential business
association, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC), will lobby the
Federal Government for a national plan to end homelessness because a
Burnaby Board of Trade (BBOT) policy resolution on this issue was passed
at the CCC AGM this morning (Monday, September 27th).

Representatives from Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade
representing business communities across Canada convened in Gatineau,
Quebec over the weekend to vote on policy resolutions submitted by
members of the Canadian Chamber network. A two-thirds majority of voting
members of the CCC voted in favour of the resolution, which calls for
the Federal Government to reallocate funds from the current federal
budget envelope to develop a national plan to end homelessness.

The BBOT policy resolution outlines the business case for ending what
the United Nations describes as "a national crisis in Canada". The BBOT
argues that homelessness has a direct financial impact on business as it
deters customers, damages employee recruitment and retention, harms
tourism and discourages companies from setting up offices in areas with
a visible homeless population.

"The endorsement of the BBOT resolution by Chambers and Boards of Trade
across Canada, highlights the fact that homelessness is an issue of
concern for businesses coast-to-coast," said Darlene Gering, President
and CEO of the BBOT. "Last year, the federal government spent $3.57
billion in direct spending on homelessness and affordable housing
initiatives, but without a national plan to manage and coordinate the
effort, Canada's capacity to end homelessness is significantly
diminished."

"A national plan to end homelessness will clearly set the goals,
objectives, metrics and outcomes to address the issue," said Susan
Papadionissou, Chair of the Burnaby Board of Trade's Homelessness Task
Force. "Without a clear strategy to end homelessness within a reasonable
timeframe, businesses across Canada will continue to be impacted by the
crisis."

The BBOT's policy resolution will be included in the Canadian Chamber of
Commerce's 2010 Policy Resolutions Book and will be remain in the book
for three years until it is removed.

Canadian Chamber Policy Book and Advocacy Effort

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce Policy Book is updated annually and
forms the Canadian Chamber's advocacy platform. Issues that are accepted
each year will stay in the book for a duration of three years before
they are removed. Issues require 2/3rd majority, as voted in the CCC's
annual AGM, before they are accepted into the Policy Book. The Canadian
Chamber of Commerce supports these issues by advocating to the federal
government and lobbying for change on behalf of 175,000 businesses in
Canada.
