FYI, attached is the Canadian highlight. The Rental Report for Ottawa will
be sent as soon as it's available; it's not yet on CMHC's site. An analysis
from Michael Shapcott is below.

Subject: [hhno-on] Canada's nation-wide rental housing squeeze grows tighter

Canada's national rental vacancy rate has dropped from an already low 2.9%
to a painfully low 2.5% in the latest survey released today by Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The survey also confirms that rents have
risen in Canada.

Rental vacancy rates fell in 21 of Canada's 35 major urban areas, and
average rents now top $1,000 in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary,
Edmonton and Victoria - where the majority of Canada's renter households
live.

About one-in-three Canadian households live in rental housing - with a
higher proportion in urban areas.

Canada has no national rental housing strategy. There is a patchwork of
federal funding and programs, but Monday's federal budget was silent on
rental housing issues. Two significant federal housing initiatives - the
Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP - which provides about
$128 million annually to fund repairs for low-income rental and ownership
homes); and the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI - which provides about
$125 million to cost-share with provinces and others the cost of new
low-income rental homes) - remain in limbo as Canadians wait for news from
the federal government about the continued funding for these programs.

Here's a link to scroll down to the CMHC rental market reports at the
national, provincial and major urban areas levels...
