Upcoming CHRA Webinar

Webinar: Free of Charge!
Webinars are always free to members of CHRA, while there is usually a cost for non-members to participate. However, CHRA and Eva's Initiatives want as many organizations as possible to have access to the important information and toolkit, which will be discussed and made available during the webinar; thus, this webinar will be free of charge to non-members and members alike. Please note that this webinar will be accessible in English only. Click here to register for webinar. Log-in information will be sent to you upon registration.

Exploring Prevention:
Working with Homeless and At-Risk Youth and their Families
Join guest presenters, Sondra Marcon and Rachel Gray, from Eva's Initiatives in Toronto as they discuss the successes of their Family Reconnect Program and share how you can duplicate this award-winning program in your own community.

In Australia and the UK, government-funded prevention strategies in education, outreach and early intervention are at the core of their responses to youth homelessness. In Canada, however, these kinds of approaches are rarely seen. Eva's Initiatives' Family Reconnect Program is one of the rare exceptions.

The Family Reconnect Program
For the past ten years, the Family Reconnect Program staff have been working to challenge the stigma that families are simply "the problem". By helping homeless youth to reconnect with their families and engaging in early prevention, the Family Reconnect Program assists in keeping young people from a long-term involvement in street life.

The positive results of this program speak for themselves. In 2009, 58 youth were assisted in returning home, moving into appropriate housing or remaining at home through early intervention. These results meant big savings for the Toronto shelter system: (based on an average 3-month stay) the city saved $312,000 thanks to this program.

The Reconnect Tool Kit
And now the staff at Eva's Initiatives want to share their success and help others to achieve it across the country. In order to do this, they have created the Reconnect Tool Kit - a helpful tool which provides:

- detailed information about the Family Reconnect Program;
- options for incorporating prevention strategies in your organization;
- resources to develop prevention initiatives in your setting;
- the basics of including families in conversation;
- details on how to structure an entire program.

This toolkit will be discussed during the webinar and an electronic copy will be provided to all participants.
