Topic:	Overview of the At Home/Chez Soi Project and the Housing First
Approach


Topic description 

This presentation is the first of a series that will provide an overview of
the Mental Health Commission of Canada's (MHCC) At Home/Chez Soi project. In
addition to providing a broad description of the project and its five sites,
this presentation will highlight the research design and project milestones
to date (e.g., enrolment, implementation).  The presentation will also
provide an overview of the "Housing First" approach and how it has been
applied in the At Home/Chez Soi study.

Background 

At Home/Chez Soi is a five-year research demonstration project funded
through a $110 million federal government allocation to the MHCC. The
purpose of the allocation is to address the needs of the growing number of
homeless people living with mental health issues. At Home/Chez Soi has been
implemented in five cities across Canada (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto,
Montréal, and Moncton) and involves over 2200 people who are homeless and
living with mental health issues.  The aim of the project is to explore ways
to help homeless people who have mental health issues, based on a "Housing
First" approach (a recovery-oriented approach based on client choice).  

Who will be presenting? 

Jayne Barker, Ph.D.,
Vice-President, Research Initiatives and Mental Health Strategy, MHCC In her
professional career, Dr. Barker has held leadership positions at the
community, regional and provincial levels. Dr. Barker has recently completed
her doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of
British Columbia, where her scholarly work focused on mental health policy
and services.

Cameron Keller M.C.,
Director, At Home/Chez Soi Project, MHCC Mr. Keller joined the Mental Health
Commission in 2009, and has provided project leadership through the
selection of research and service partners since the early planning and
development phase of the At Home/Chez Soi Project. Mr. Keller's passion for
working in the field of mental health is driven by personal experience with
a family member's difficulties with mental health and homelessness.

Description du sujet

Première d'une série, cette présentation débute par un survol du projet de
la Commission de la santé mentale du Canada, At Home/Chez Soi. En plus de
fournir une description du projet et de ses cinq sites, la présentation
aborde la conception de recherche et les différentes étapes du projet (par
exemple : la participation et la mise en oeuvre). Une section est aussi
dédié à l'approche ''Priorité au logement'' et comment celle-ci s'applique à
l'intérieur du projet At Home/Chez Soi.   

Contexte

At Home/Chez Soi est un projet d'une durée de cing ans financé par la
Commission de la santé mentale du Canada (CSMC) résultant d'une allocation
du gouvernement fédéral de $110 millions. Ce projet a pour but de répondre
aux besoins du nombre croissant de personnes sans abri vivant avec des
problèmes de santé mentale. At Home/Chez Soi à été mis en oeuvre dans cinq
villes du Canada (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal, et Moncton) et
comprends plus de 2200 personnes sans abri vivant avec des problèmes de
santé mentale. Ce projet explorera différentes manières d'aider les
personnes itinérantes qui vivent avec des problèmes de santé mentale à
partir d'une approche de type ''Priorité au logement'' (une approche basée
sur les choix du client favorisant le rétablissement).

leadership à la communauté, aux niveaux régional et provincial. Elle a
