Every year Ottawa Public Health (OPH) monitors the cost of healthy eating by conducting an annual Nutritious Food Basket (NFB) survey.  The survey follows a protocol from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and involves costing 67 basic food items representing current recommendations and average eating patterns of Canadians.  It excludes take out and restaurant foods, processed convenience foods, snack foods and household non-food items such as toilet paper, toothpaste or detergent that would normally be purchased at the grocery store.  As a result the cost of the NFB is lower than actual grocery expenditures for the average resident.   

OPH uses the data from the NFB to produce a worksheet which can be used to determine the average cost of feeding 22 age and gender groups and a reference family of four.  The Cost of a Nutritious Food Basket- Ottawa, 2011 is available in html or PDF formats from:

Chaque année, Santé publique Ottawa évalue le coût d'une alimentation saine dans le cadre d'une étude appelée le Panier de provisions nutritif (PPN). Cette étude suit un protocole du ministère de la Santé et des Soins de longue durée. Le panier se compose de 67 aliments de base conformes aux recommandations actuelles et représentant les habitudes alimentaires courantes des Canadiens. Le panier exclut les mets à emporter ou ceux vendus dans des restaurants, les grignotines et les articles ménagers non alimentaires comme le papier hygiénique, la pâte dentifrice ou les détersifs qu'on achète habituellement à l'épicerie. En raison de l'exclusion de ces types d'aliments plus coûteux, le coût du panier à provisions nutritif est généralement plus faible que celui du panier acheté par la moyenne des Canadiens.   

SPO utilise les données du PPN pour élaborer une feuille de travail qui peut être utilisée pour estimer le coût moyen d'une alimentation équilibrée pour les personnes des deux sexes appartenant à différents groupes d'âge (22 groupes) et une famille référence de quatre personnes.
