3 Types of student placements (varying in terms of hours):
1) Hours for a first year placement always take place in the winter term: 196 hours, at the front end of the week,14 hours per week;
2) second year placements are from September - April, 3 days a week, Wednesday - Fridays, 21 hours per week, 294 hours per semester;
3) the intensives have placement, starting the last week of March, Mondays and Tuesdays, until the end of April, and then they increase their hours and days to 4 days per week, until the end of June.
General Goals of Fieldwork:
1. Develop some of the techniques and skills common to practice in the social welfare field, such as: observation, data collection and organization, assessment, interviewing, intake, reporting and evaluating, both in written and oral form, and having responsibility for maintaining an appropriate helping relationship with clientele in the field setting.
2. Gain first-hand knowledge and greater understanding of the network of social welfare services in the community, their manner of operation, the social contribution of each and of some of the forces in the community which affect them.
3. Develop a capacity to maintain some level of constructive working relationship with agency personnel so as to contribute to agency service.
4. Become aware of and analyze his/her own value orientations and his/her feelings about people and the problems they bring to social agencies.
5. Be able to recognize and identify general behaviour patterns, and their significance in the client's current manner of trying to deal with situations.
6. Participate with clients in the process of setting and evaluating goals.
7. Gain an appreciation of the impact of such problems as poor housing, financial dependency, delinquency, family breakdown, mental illness upon individuals, families and communities.
8. Demonstrate the capacity to advocate for clients in either verbal or written form.
9. Demonstrate initiative within the agency to enhance student’s learning objectives.
In the achievement of these objectives, the student would have the opportunity to assume responsibility for productive tasks within the agency.
Implicit in the above goals is the student's ability to apply knowledge, theory and understanding derived from course content.
These goals are seen as a progression, their application and attainment occurring over the field placement periods. One would expect to see a reasonable level in skill in all of these areas, as is seen to be appropriate in each agency.
Examples:
-interfacing agencies, there might be specific interest in working with youth and children, or more with the adult population,
-working with some of the tenants who are women.
-group facilitation via programs, support groups, assisting with tenant groups, etc.
-funding proposals, and various levels, or events that might take place within the agency.
