National Housing Day, November 22, 2012

People and communities across Canada call for the funding and implementation
of a National Housing Strategy so that each person can live in decent,
secure and affordable housing. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities
calls for an array of federal tax incentives to increase investment in
rental housing to create new construction jobs and give cash-strapped
Canadians more affordable housing options.

Here in Ottawa, the Alliance to End Homelessness asks MPs for a well-funded
National Housing Strategy because 7,299 people stayed in Ottawa emergency
shelters for an average of 67 days in 2011 and 10,000 households were
waiting for Ottawa social housing.

A National Housing Strategy must ensure that federal and provincial
governments to do more to assist local communities in addressing affordable
housing.

Since 2004 the Alliance has honoured National Housing Day by holding its
annual Community Forum on Homelessness. This year it will take place next
week on the 29th.
