Hello everyone,
Locally, the Alliance can report that people in Ottawa are indeed contacting
Council members to request that they not go forward with the cuts and
reductions in essential services for those with the lowest incomes. There is
still time to add your own voice if you haven't done so yet. The Alliance is
still hopeful that Council the 2.5 Million needed to maintain the 2012
services will be addressed in another fashion so that those who are the most
vulnerable in our community are not asked to bear the brunt of reduced
funding from the province. This afternoon take a couple moments to contact
the Mayor and your own Councillor to say what you want to see happen. It is
our firm belief that it is definitely possible to move forward on increasing
affordable housing, assisting homeless people and maintaining services for
people with low incomes all at the same time.
FYI, a few updates courtesy of the Housing Network of Ontario:
1. On a provincial level, the campaign to save the Community Start-Up
and Maintenance Benefit is ongoing. Demonstrations have taken place in
Toronto, Sudbury, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton and elsewhere. Over a
thousand people have sent emails through the ISAC/ACTO webpage:
http://sareview.ca/isac-news/act-now-to-save-housing-supports-for-people-on-
ow-and-odsp/ The Wellesley Institute, ISAC, ACTO, the AOHC, Street Health
and Peterborough County-City Health Unit produced a report on the health
impacts of the cuts to CSUMB:

2. Federal national housing strategy Bill C-400 has had one day of
debate, but thanks to suggestions from anti-poverty and human rights
advocates, the NDP has moved the final vote from this week to later in
February, to give all of us time for more lobbying of MPs to support it.
3. ACTO and the Right to Housing Coalition are expecting to launch a
postcard/email campaign calling for a national housing strategy on Dec 10th
- International Human Rights Day.
