En choisissant de ne pas renouveler les subventions,  les conservateurs
laissent les Canadiens vulnérables à eux-mêmes

OTTAWA – À la veille de la première heure de débat sur le projet de loi
C-400 sur le logement, la porte-parole du NPD en matière de logement,
Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga), ainsi que l’instigatrice du projet de
loi, Marie-Claude Morin (Saint-Hyacinthe – Bagot), joignent leurs voix à
celles de nombreux groupes et associations qui réclament une aide urgente du
gouvernement fédéral pour le financement de logements sociaux.

« Le Canada est le seul pays du G8 à ne pas avoir de stratégie nationale sur
le logement. En 2009, Stephen Harper s’est engagé devant le Conseil des
droits de l’Homme de l’ONU à travailler plus efficacement avec les provinces
et les territoires afin de s’assurer que tous les Canadiens aient accès à un
logement convenable. Il est temps de faire honneur à cette promesse et c’est
exactement ce que notre projet de loi permettra d’accomplir », a déclaré Mme
Morin.

Le projet de loi C-400 vise à offrir à tous les Canadiens un logement sûr,
adéquat, accessible et abordable. Mme Boutin-Sweet a par ailleurs amorcé une
tournée sur le logement cet automne afin de consulter la population sur le
sujet et d’élaborer la stratégie pancanadienne du NPD en la matière. 

« Le désengagement du gouvernement fédéral devant ses responsabilités en
matière de logement social est flagrant et croissant. Les provinces sont à
bout de ressources. Le manque de logements sociaux et leur dégradation en
raison du manque de financement sont à un niveau critique et 1,5 million de
ménages n’ont pas accès à un toit. Il est plus que temps de les aider »,
indique par ailleurs Mme Boutin-Sweet.

SOCIAL HOUSING: NDP AND ORGANIZATIONS URGE CONSERVATIVES TO TAKE
RESPONSIBILITY 

By choosing not to renew subsidies, Conservatives are leaving vulnerable
Canadians to their own devices 

OTTAWA – On the eve of the first hour of debate on Bill C-400 on housing,
New Democrat Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga) as well as
Marie-Claude Morin (Saint-Hyacinthe – Bagot), who initiated the bill, join
many groups and associations in calling for urgent assistance from the
federal government to finance social housing. 

“Canada is the only G8 country without a national housing strategy. In 2009,
Stephen Harper pledged before the UN Human Rights Council to work more
efficiently with the provinces and territories to ensure that all Canadians
have access to affordable housing. It’s time to fulfill this promise and
that’s exactly what C-400 will accomplish,” said Morin.

Bill C-400 seeks to ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable
housing for all Canadians. Boutin-Sweet begins a tour on housing this fall
to consult the public upon this issue and elaborate the NDP’s national
housing strategy. 

“The federal government’s disengagement with respect to its social housing
responsibilities is blatant and growing. The provinces are running out of
resources. The lack of social housing and its deterioration due to the lack
of funding are at a critical level. Over 1.5 million families don’t have
access to social housing. It’s more than time to help them,” said
Boutin-Sweet.
