For Sonia Vargas, 56, Cornerstone Housing for Women in Ottawa has not only given her a home, but it has provided her with stability, a second chance, and a reason to feel free. Originally born in Peru, Sonia has been living at a Cornerstone residence for almost a year. She lives with six other women, most of them fairly young, leaving Sonia to fill the mother role that she is naturally drawn to.

Before finding Cornerstone, Sonia’s life was much more difficult. After living in Florida for 10 years, she was forced to move back to Peru when her work permit expired.
