With Common Purpose: Working with Business Improvement Areas/Zones for Housing
February 20th (1:30 PM - 3:00 PM ET)
Across the country, local businesses are taking action on homelessness and its community impacts, recognizing that affordable housing and supports for vulnerable populations is critical to the success of their communities. These views and activities are generally expressed through a Business Improvement Area or Zone (BIA/BIZ), which serves as the collective voice for business in a particular neighbourhood, making them an important voice for homelessness and affordable housing.
This webinar will look at initiatives developed by two BIAs/BIZs. The Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone’s Change for the Better program, which supports homeless individuals transitioning from the street into employment and the Mission Off the Streets Team, which employs people living on the street, will be discussed. We’ll also hear about the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ’s CEO Sleepout, which raises awareness and funds for homelessness initiatives. The Downtown Vancouver BIA approach, which supports a continuum of housing options for the most vulnerable citizens in their community, will be presented, in addition to their program which provides employment opportunities for formerly homeless individuals.
Come and learn about what BIAs/BIZs are doing across the country to address housing and homelessness challenges, and how your organization can work with them!

It’s Everybody’s Business: Engaging the Private Sector in Solutions to Youth Homelessness
March 7, 2013 (1:30 PM - 3:00 PM ET)
As more industrialized countries struggle with rising youth unemployment, young people with no job or prospects are ill-equipped to be contributing members of an inclusive, healthy and sustainable economy. Homelessness is a common and serious reality for many of these young people. The business sector can play a critical role in addressing youth homelessness by providing at-risk youth with skills training, employment and apprenticeship opportunities. Yet only a small number of Canada’s employers offer these opportunities. Seeking the engagement of the private sector in finding solutions to youth homelessness, this webinar will examine some key questions, based a toolkit recently launched by Raising the Roof, a national charity focused on long-term solutions to homelessness.
These questions include what types of practical information for employers who want to give disadvantaged youth a chance at a job need? How can community employment programs trying to find work for their young clients best reach out to employers?
