Community Appreciation Awards in Mental Health Announced

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Ottawa Branch has presented its Community Appreciation Awards for 2014.

The Awards celebrate exceptional commitment to mental health in our community, recognizing the excellent contributions of individuals, families, groups and organizations. These include:


·         People with lived experience, their families and friends

·         Volunteers with mental health organizations or programs

·         Contributors to mental health through the arts or media

·         Individual or organizational providers of mental health services (health and mental health professionals, social workers, peer supporters, trainers, etc.)

·         Programs of extraordinary effectiveness, timeliness or innovation

·         "Friends of mental health" in our community.

The awards are chosen by a selection committee based on nominations received.

Community Appreciation Recipients 2014

John Barker
Recognized for his long-time service to the community based on his work as an "articulate and impassioned advocate for the integration of developmental disability and mental health services to improve access for clients and families".

Christina Jahn
Nominated by the Elizabeth Frye Society and recognized for her contributions as "a woman who took on the system to fight for the rights of people with mental health issues are criminalized and won.... Her selflessness in taking an individual issue and bringing it to a broader forum to benefit the greater good"....and her "resolve and, dogged persistence in the fight for social justice, and determination to make things better for others."

Dr.  Rajiv Bhatla
Recognized for his work as Psychiatrist in Chief at the Royal and Consultant Psychiatrist with Upstream and for his contribution to mental health in the Ottawa community over the past 22 years. He was also acknowledged for being "a leader in the delivery of innovative mental health services and enhancing the quality of life of clients and providers in urban and rural areas who would otherwise have no access to psychiatry".

Karen Sabourin
Recognized for her service and commitment as a Volunteer Crisis Line Specialist with the Distress Centre of Ottawa and Region as a "dedicated, conscientious and committed member of our team with a highly developed sense of giving back to the community," and who "never enters into things lightly and once committed, gives her whole heart."
