Speaker Series Invitation
Behind Bars: Brain Injury and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in our Justice System
Our society’s understanding of crime, of guilt and innocence, of following rules, is based on the idea that our brains are all functioning in the same way.  But what happens when a brain is injured, either before birth through exposure to alcohol or after birth through an acquired brain injury?  Individuals with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), are significantly over represented in our prison populations.  Join us to learn about the challenge of ABI and FASD and to talk about innovative approaches to service provision that can help.  Dr. Colantonio is researcher leading important groundwork around the need for a longer-term approach to meet the changing needs of those living with the affects of brain injury, as well as the shortage and inconsistency of rehabilitation services across the country.

Derrière les barreaux : blessures cérébrales et trouble du spectre de l'alcoolisation fœtale dans notre système de justice
La conception qu’a notre société de la criminalité, de la culpabilité et de l’innocence ainsi que du respect des règles repose sur l’idée selon laquelle nos cerveaux fonctionnent tous de la même façon. Mais que se passe-t-il en cas de lésion cérébrale avant la naissance en raison de l’exposition à l’alcool ou après la naissance en raison d’une lésion cérébrale acquise? Les personnes ayant le trouble du spectre de l’alcoolisation fœtal (TSAF) ou une lésion cérébrale acquise (LCA) sont grandement surreprésentées dans notre population carcérale. Joignez-vous à nous pour vous renseigner sur le problème de la LCA et du TSAF et parler d’approches novatrices de prestation de services qui pourraient s’avérer utiles. La Dre  Colantonio est une chercheuse qui dirige d’importants travaux préliminaires portant sur le besoin d’adopter une approche à long terme pour répondre aux besoins changeants des personnes qui subissent les effets d’une lésion cérébrale, ainsi que sur l’insuffisance et le manque d’uniformité des services de réadaptation offerts à la grandeur du pays.
