Best Start Resource Centre in collaboration with Centretown Community Health Centre are hosting the Child and Family Poverty Workshop. This interactive workshop is for service providers who work with young children, with parents of young children, or who have the opportunity to influence the health and development of young children.
This workshop will address pertinent information for service providers working with families with young children (0-6 years old) living in poverty. It will share information about rates of child poverty, consequences of child poverty, strategies that influence the impact of child poverty, and strategies that influence the rate of child poverty. We expect a maximum of 75 participants.
We are looking for a speaker for a 1 or 1.5 hour session regarding poor families with young children (0-6) living in shelters, being homelessness, and to learn of the housing situation for them in Ottawa. Content of the session can include:

· What is the current data regarding the families and young children living in shelters?

· What is the current data for women and young children living in women shelters and over flow hotels?

· What is the impact on healthy childhood development? Short term? Long term?

_ Mental, social, emotional, physical health

_ Access to healthy food

_ Education

_ Attachment

· What are the factors that contribute to the fact that a family ends up living in a shelter?

· What are the ongoing challenges?

· How are the challenges being met?

· What resources are available for parents and young children?

· This is a very difficult environment for staff to work in. What is the impact on front-line staff?

· As partner agencies are establishing partnership with shelters to provide services in shelters, how can staff prepare themselves for working with target population?

Please do not hesitate to contact me to further discuss. Details about registration can be found at BSRC website<http://en.beststart.org/events>.
