Greetings supporters,
Councillor McKenney has introduced a notice of motion

to
declare a Housing Emergency in Ottawa. As supporters, we are appealing to
you to take action. Ottawa's housing and homelessness crisis is evidenced
in record high numbers of shelter use, steady upward increases in family
homelessness, and homelessness for single men and women, and over 12,000
applicants on the centralized waiting list – an all-time high.
Demonstrating public support for the motion will be critical to its success
at City Council on January 29th.
There are four ways that you can help:
1. Sign the petition <https://www.housingemergencyottawa.ca/> and share
with your networks.
2. To facilitate signatures, a paper copy of the petition has been
created (attached). Collect signatures and send any completed paper
petitions to Sam Hersh at 147 Glenora Street, Ottawa, K1S 1J4 in advance of
January 29th to ensure the data can be entered before the vote (contact Sam
at samhersh02 at gmail.com if needed)
3. Share the attached poster with your networks, and print the poster and
post
4. Attend the rally
<https://www.housingemergencyottawa.ca/rally_to_declare_a_housing_emergency> on
January 29th, 9am at Marion Dewar Plaza at City Hall, and encourage your
friends, neighbours and colleagues to attend as well. Share the rally
information <https://www.facebook.com/events/844497879345944/> on your
social media channels.
The Housing Emergency motion would:
· declare an affordable housing and homelessness emergency in Ottawa;
· acknowledge that the City of Ottawa does not possess the resources to
manage this crisis alone and must call on the Provincial and Federal
governments for assistance by providing the City with an immediate increase
in emergency funding for housing, housing supports and housing allowances
as well as a long-term financial plan to meet the needs of the community;
· resolve that the update to the ten-year housing and homelessness plan
includes aggressive targets to:
o preserve and increase the affordable housing supply;
o increase access to housing affordability;
o prevent the occurrence of homelessness and eliminate by 100 percent
chronic homelessness by 2024; and
o ensure people are supported to achieve housing stability and long-term
housing retention.

See on at the rally on January 29th!
